Views of Jesus and His Role in Our Salvation
Our Sunday morning adult forum starts on
September
12th, with a six-session course on how our views
of Jesus and His role in our salvation have shifted over the centuries in America. "The Creating Savior"
will view Jesus from a variety of perspectives: "The
Healing Jesus," "The Teaching Jesus," "The Suffering
Jesus," and "The Get-Rich-Quick Jesus." Using her
extensive research, Maria Kane is particularly wellsuited
to helping us understand how our contemporary
views on Jesus emerged over time, and how we might
recover some of the best aspects of who Jesus is,
which have been emphasized less in recent years.
Weekdays
Bible Study: Psalms
Led by: The Rev. Michael Delk
Monday nights at 7 pm
Begins July - Sept. 2010
New Chapel Narthex
Wednesday Morning Ladies Bible Study led by Ms. Mary Brittain takes place
Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Narthex. This is a continuing study and fellowship group. They are currently studying the New Testament in the format of half-hour lectures on DVD by Professor Bart D. Ehrman of the University
of North Carolina, Department of Religion. Member Anna Stone says, "Our St. Hilarious Group has been meeting on
Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. for more than 30 years.
We are more than a Bible Study Group. We meet to
pray together, counsel each other, solve problems,
chat, study Scripture, fold a few bulletins for the
Sunday services, read and discuss Christian Literature,
and share life. We laugh a lot. Our membership
has dwindled over the years and we want some
of you to join us as we regroup this fall. We welcome
anyone who would like to join a loving, sharing,
joyous, serious, questioning, happy, spirit filled
group."
Education for Ministry (EFM)
We have an active EFM group meeting Wednesday evenings at 7:00 in the Narthex. The EFM program,
which can be completed in four years, provides Christians with the basic skills in theological
reflection, which lay the foundation of Christian ministry. Through this process, students sharpen
their skills of personal and cultural assessment and enhance their ability to be effective in
a variety of ministries. Learn more about EFM
on the Sewanee web site or contact HNC's EFM mentors:
Phyllis Faas and Rick Garfield.
Retreats
Hickory Neck sponsors special retreats periodically - watch the newsletters and bulletins for information. Regular opportunities to grow as a Christian are offered by Cursillo in the Diosese of Southern Virginia.
Cursillo is often known as a three-day retreat weekend held at Camp Chanco on the James, but the weekend is not all that Cursillo offers.
