June 4 :A Face in the Crowd
Meet Lonesome Rhodes: drifter, story-teller and guitar picker. He’s been in and out of jails aplenty but now he has reason to smile. He’s just met his perfect match, a talking piece of furniture known as television. This classic film from 66 years ago marks the stunning film debut of Andy Griffith. From the On the Waterfront’s Academy Award winning collaborators, director Elia Kazan and screenwriter, Budd Schulberg, A Face in the Crowd confronts the media world of the time and perhaps now.
June 11:Seven Days in Utopia
Luke Chisholm (Lucas Black) is a young golfer who’s about to take a swing at the big time. Luke, however, has a big blowup that makes national news, drives away his father/coach, and seemingly scuttles his once-promising career. While driving along a Texas backroad, Luke crashes through the fence of eccentric rancher Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall). Johnny makes Luke an irresistible offer: spend a week with him in the tiny town of Utopia and see if Luke can change his life.
June 19: A River Runs Through It
The Maclean brothers, Paul (Brad Pitt) and Norman (Craig Sheffer), live a relatively idyllic life in rural Montana, spending much of their time fly fishing. The sons of a minister (Tom Skerritt), the boys eventually part company when Norman moves east to attend college, leaving his rebellious brother to find trouble back home. When Norman finally returns, the siblings resume their fishing outings, and assess both where they’ve been and where they’re going.
June 25: The Mission
Jesuit priest Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) enters the Guarani lands in South America with the purpose of converting the natives to Christianity. He soon builds a mission, where he is joined by Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert De Niro), a reformed slave trader seeking redemption. When a treaty transfers the land from Spain to Portugal, the Portuguese government wants to capture the natives for slave labor. Mendoza and Gabriel resolve to defend the mission, but disagree on how to accomplish the task.
